Phoenix Bodies / Raein - Split (2004)

Genre: Screamo/Post-Hardcore/Powerviolence

Tracklisting:
1. Phoenix Bodies - Sense is Out of Style
2. Phoenix Bodies - The Future of Eating
3. Raein - Endless Tourlife

This split opens up with mad grind-like part of Phoenix Bodies, fast and brutal. Then it calms down - Raein's track is rather atmospheric, a little bit post-rocky I might even say. The song is maybe too long a bit, it could end at 4:30 moment, but then the guitars play intro back again, some strange noises loom in the distance, then they show up and are explicit and poof, the end. The whole split is nice, though, no doubt.

Raein - Il N'y A Pas De Orchestre [2003]

Genre: Screamo/Post-Hardcore

Tracklisting:
1. The Tree
2. The Kking Is Dead
3. Il Ny A Pass De Orchestre
4. From 3 To 1 In 2 And 4
5. Tetraedycal Fluctuating Faster Than The Speed Of Ligs
6. Miss Kelly Dathe
7. Artmachine Observation Tower
8. Tigersuit
9. She Wears My Blood
10. I Was Fine Before You Came

Raein's second LP, certainly their best one. The new Nati Da Altri Padri after reuniting haven't caught my ear. This album quite similar to their split with mighty Daïtro - very intense and violent. Tigersuit is the biggest killer here.

Raein & Daïtro - Split 10'' [2004]

Genre: Screamo/Post-Hardcore

Tracklisting:
1. Raein - Faithless
2. Raein - Parte 1
3. Raein - New day scenario
4. Raein - Blue lines
5. Daïtro - Au about de mes lèvres
6. Daïtro - Un bateau ivre
7. Daïtro - À chaque fois

OK, it's actually my favourite screamo work ever, so not many words this time. Really, Raein's part on this split just kicks ass. It's heavy, it's violent, passionate, emotional, chaotic, atmospheric and fucking melodic and thrilling at the same time. Faithless is simply the best emo track of all time. OF ALL TIME. Just sayin'.

Saetia - Demo Cassette [1997]

Genre: Screamo/Post-Hardcore

Tracklisting:
1. The Burden of Reflecting
2. Closed Hands
3. Venus and Bacchus
4. One Dying Wish

One of the first recordings by legendary band on American screamo scene Saetia, containing cult song Venus and Bacchus. Some say these are the best songs of their discography, but I haven't listened to them enough to claim so. It's not as melodic as European screamo representatives though, but just classic.

Tracklisting:
1. With Wings Of Feathers and Glue
2. September Gave Us Awkwardness, October Gave Me Nothing
3. The Greatest Actors Keep On Acting Offstage
4. Can't Believe I Spelled It Out To You

This EP is an awesome pack of stunningly emotional screamo with a post-rocky feel, one of my favourites in genre. Sounds like a mix of fast tempos and melody of La Quiete and aggressiveness and chaos known from Raein. The moment at the beginning of Can't Believe I Spelled It Out To You is just magical.

Genre: Screamo

Tracklisting:
1. Ah Feel Like Ah Said
2. Schizophrenia
3. A Mad Gleam
4. Song 4
5. Untitled #3
6. Tarotplane
7. Come On Jane

Sorry for the last almost 10 days of idleness, I've just had a lot of workload and I've been trying to cope with that... And by the way, I've managed to finish my next mix (technically reaaally better than the previous one, grime-like) - if you want some chilly atmospheric dubstep, go for it!. I've heard that maybe the connections between tracks are not top-notch (come on, that's my third effort to make such thing), but the tracks-choice is certainly accurate and simply very good. Enjoy!

Anyway, I'm gonna come back to posting some pretty albums every day or two. This time I'll present a few great underground European screamo bands, especially from France and Italy (I guess not only today, I've been a big fan of this style of music recently - so expect some downright cool screamo albums next few days).

Who first? Tristan Tzara, Germany-based screamo collective consisting of members from bands like Kobra Khan or Louise Cyphre. This CD is an EP, lasting hardly ten minutes, but those are probably one of the most brutal and emotional ten minutes of whole hardcore and emo genre. Not-so-good production just gives it additional weight and feel of violence. If I was to compare Tristan Tzara to another band, I would say - Orchid! Any more conviction needed?

11 The Irony Of It All (03:30)
12 Weak Become Heroes (05:33)
13 Who Dares Wins (00:34)
14 Stay Positive (06:16)

Truly, this is one of the best hip hop albums I've ever listened, also one of the weirdest. The vocal actually isn't a rap, it's a kind of melorecitation. At first, I couldn't understand the music - for me it was a strange mix of cool backgrounds and rap that was totally out of the music. But after sometime I realised that Original Pirate Material makes me perfectly relaxed and the music itself is great, too. After In The Middle remix I started to admire Mike Skinner's voice and accent - very soft, truly English. Strongly recommended!

6. The Black Ghosts - Some Way Through This (Plastician & Skream Remix)
7. Flow Dan - Just Me ft. Riko
8. Smut - Badman Place
9. Rusko - Jahova

I made a short mixtape this morning. O, and this is one of my first mixtapes ever, so the connections between tracks are not as good as I would like them to be... But the I hope the choice of tracks will compensate it! :) While making it I focused mainly on grime, danceable rhythms and some slight reggae elements, of course everything kept in dubstep stylistics. Enjoy!

Bury Me Alive is a very solid record, a bit d-beat with lots of heavy breakdowns, actually quite similar to the Angelreich style. Psychedelic industrial improvisation starts with "Just tell me when to start... anytime? ok. [and with a sweet, 10-years-old-boy-like voice] To mom on mother's day...>". Awesome.

First studio LP by industrial classic SPK (after the live album At the Crypt) is somehow an introduction to their famous Leichenschrei [as Socialistiches Patienten Kollektiv] - the 'weakest' noise-explorers are easily discouraged by this album. Disturbing noisy power electronics improvisations with a well-hidden germ of melody are the clue of Information Overload Unit [as System Planning Korporation]. Though, some of the songs show the post-punk inspiration of SPK - like the second track Suture Obsession with a bass guitar on the first plan.

Angelreich is a Polish metalcore band, this track is from their debut album The Plague. It's got few very good songs, this one is on the highest metalcore standard. I've experienced them live and I know they're doing their job pretty well. Unfortunately, on their debut CD with 8 tracks, 2 of them are intro and outro, and 1 is an electronic interlude...

12. Feeling Redundant 03:23
13. A No-sided Argument 02:13

We are being used to fact, that Napalm Death, 80's grindcore precursor, every 1-2 years releases a good, solid piece of grindcore with death metal influences. Same with Time Waits for No Slave - it's nothing special, just a solid, enjoyable album. It's got some very-very-downbeat tracks, like On the Brink of Extinction or Life and Limb, and these moments are actually the best on the whole CD.

Not simple, like other East Coast albums - the 'Supervillain' had already created his abstract style of setting up the beats. Awesome piece of Harsh EBM in Combichrist aggro-tech style. Their heavy beats, distorted vocal typical for this kind of music and lots of loops makes The Crypt Injection very psychedelic, leading to some kind of trance. This album gots also some electro-industrial interludes, sounding like dark and gothic musical landscapes. Best EBM record I ever listened to so far. Strongly recommended!

9. Watching Over You 6:09
10. Icarus 4:09

I got a problem with this release. At first glance - it's uncommon, ambitious futurepop with great depth, not typical like other EBM records - just hard beat, few melodies and harsh vocal. Beyond Flatline sometimes gets more instrumental, sometimes has spoken or just softly sung vocals. I'd like to give it something like 4.0, but unfortunately the songs are not as enjoyable as they could be, like in The Soul Is In The Software for example. This album is like IDM in all those electronic genres - deep and inspiring, but sometimes just not pleasant enough.

Tracklisting:

2. Imitation of Perseus
3. Harbinger (live)

I found it coincidentally on some site with thousands of links. Fortunately, it turned out to be a great piece of ambient drones. Reminds me June Nadja's gig with thisquietarmy as support - the third track sounds exactly like some of the live drony improvisations of young Eric Quach [thisquietarmy only member]. The whole CD sounds like Nadja playing post-rock. Memorable.

As we read on Gomeisa blogspot, we see, that Birth-Giver is "a collection of re-worked/re-recorded scraps from the 'The Ecstatic Half-Life' sessions. A much more subdued affair, and a breather before the noise that's coming yr way in the following months." It's a free download. The next album is now avaible, though: here. MF DOOM - Born Like This [2009]

Genre: East Coast Hip Hop/Hardcore Hip Hop/Abstract Hip Hop

Tracklisting:
1 Supervillain Intro
2 Gazzillion Ear
3 Ballskin
4 Yessir (feat. Raekwon)
5 Absolutely
6 Rap Ambush
7 Lightworks
8 Batty Boyz

12 Stil Dope
13 Better Than Beer (feat. Kurious)
14 Microwave Mayo
15 More Rhymin'
16 That's That
17 In Ya Dreams
18 Thank Ya

MF DOOM (known as Victor Vaughn, King Geedorah, Madvillain) is certainly one of the most recognizable people of the underground hip hop scene. His, hm, let's say, intelligent (I mean not trivial) beats could be instrumental as well, and the album would still be very good. For example, Lightworks is actually J Dilla's beat from album Donuts. Happily, Born Like This doesn't have many instrumental, boring interludes, so that it's a really nice listen.

24. Stumped 1:55
25. Good Guys (Don't Wear White) 2:14
26. Salad Days 2:44

Compilation of all Minor Threat songs - 1 album and 2 EPs. Because their songs are like 1-2 minutes long, there's no problem in getting the 'Complete Discography'. The songs are actually as good as short :) Old school, raw hardcore punk with bad production (that isn't disadvantage, though). By song 'Straight Edge' they defined the... yeah, straight edge movement, what a surprise.

06. The Expanding Void [Evolution] (4:19)
07. Red Memory [Observation] (3:32)
08. A Passion Vessel [Contemplation] (3:30)

"Tracks 1-4, titled "Pulsating Flesh," were recorded live at the Hurricane in Kansas City on July 31, 1996. Tracks 5-8, titled "Spliced & Segmented," were compiled from home demos recorded in August and September 1995."

The first 4 tracks were composed entirely of samples taken from other bands. You can easily identify the obvious cuts borrowed from Nine Inch Nails, Dead Can Dance, Skinny Puppy, Coil, Curve, Lords Of Acid, SPK, etc. Tracks 05-08 were recorded in the same technique. Generally, The Collapsing Void is based on a slow percussion, heavy drones and dense electro-industrial backgrounds. To encourage - you can hear for example Lustmord in The Abduction of Winter.

Combichrist - Today We Are All Demons [2009]

Genre: Harsh EBM/Electro-Industrial

Tracklisting:
01. No Afterparty
02. All Pain Is Gone
03. Kickstart The Fight
04. I Want Your Blood
05. Can't Change The Beat
06. Sent To Destroy
07. Spit
08. New Form Of Silence
09. Scarred
10. The Kill V2
11. Get Out Of My Head
12. Today We Are All Demons
13. At The End Of It All

New Combichrist album gets extreme different opinions - some say it's their best album so far, some that it's epic collapse of Combichrist, some say yet another things... My opinion slightly connects all the ideas altogether - yea, it actually is a bit worse than for example Everybody Hates You, but it's definitely not bad - some songs are one of the best in the genre - All Pain Is Gone, Sent to Destroy. Today We Are All Demons links harsh beats and lack of melodies with melodic, electro-industrial refrains. This kind of contrasts greatly fits the music on this album.

Njiqahdda - Taegnuub - Ishnji Angma [2009]

Genre: Atmospheric Black Metal/Ambient

Tracklisting:
1. Purnakalamanna (04:46)
2. Silvaan Mortaa Esk Aal (03:50)
3. Njiuni Elova (05:20)

5. Ishnji Angma (03:53)
6. Taegnuub (10:18)
7. Aski (07:04)
8. Nil Fyan Utopiia (14:24)

Generally black metal discourages me to itself, because all the 'different' projects actually sound like everything else. It's really hard to find something great in this genre. And this is that kind of 'gem' - great atmosphere, many layers of heavily distorted guitars making it little shoegazer, sounding somehow similar to Nadja. Ambient parts make the album more atmospheric, giving some progressive elements to the music, but actually they could be a bit shorter.
